Office of Food Safety and Food and Drug Administration to Hold Codex Public Meetings
USDA's Office of Food Safety (OFS) and the Department of Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold public meetings on November 9 and 14.

One public meeting will be held on November 9 to provide information and receive public comments on agenda items and draft U.S. positions on food hygiene.

This information will be discussed at the Thirty-eighth Session of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which will be held from December 4-9, in Houston, Texas.

The public meeting will be held from 1-4 p.m., in the rear of the cafeteria in the USDA South Building, 1400 Independence Avenue SW., Washington, D.C. 20250.

OFS and FDA will also hold a public meeting on November 14 to discuss agenda items coming before the Sixth Session of the Codex ad hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology (FBT) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission. The committee will also present draft U.S. positions on the agenda items. The Sixth Session of the FBT will be held from November 27 - December 1, in Chiba, Japan.

The public meeting will be held from 2 - 4 p.m., in Room 107-A, USDA, Jamie Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Ave. SW., Washington, D.C.

FSIS to Co-Chair Symposium on Risk Analysis
FSIS will co-chair a symposium during the 2006 Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) annual meeting.

The theme of the meeting is "Risk Analysis in a Dynamic World: Making a Difference."

The symposium will focus on modeling the attribution of foodborne illness in the United States and adaptation of a model for attributing human salmonellosis to consumption of meat, poultry and eggs in the United States.

The SRA annual meeting brings together nearly 1,000 international scientists and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines who share an interest in risk analysis.

The annual meeting will feature several plenary sessions focused on the theme of making a difference and the role of risk analysis in a dynamic world.

It will also consist of technical sessions in the form of oral presentations, posters and poster-platforms.

The SRA meeting will be held from December 3 - 6, at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, 202 East Pratt Street, Baltimore, Md. 21202.

FSIS Revises Homeland Security Surveillance of Firms and Products in Commerce
FSIS issued Directive 5420.3, Revision 4 on October 31, titled, Homeland Security Threat Condition Response - Surveillance of Firms and Products in Commerce.

This directive provides procedures that FSIS' Office of Program Evaluation, Enforcement and Review personnel should follow at non official establishments when the Department of Homeland Security declares a threat condition yellow, orange or red.

FSIS to Hold Regulatory Education Session for Small and Very Small Plants
FSIS will hold a regulatory education session on November 29, for the owners and operators of small and very small plants in Pennsylvania.

The session will cover a regulatory walk-through of sanitation standard operating procedures and the hazard analysis and critical control point and rules of practice regulations.

The regulatory education session will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center, 100 Adams Avenue, Scranton, Pa.

Export Tip of the Week
FSIS Form 9060-5, Meat and Poultry Export Certificate of Wholesomeness, should not be issued for product destined to U.S. territories.

Those territories are: American Samoa; Baker Island; Guam; Howland Island; Jarvis Island; Johnston Atoll; Kingman Reef; Midway Islands; Navassa; Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; Palmyra Atoll; Puerto Rico; Virgin Islands of the United States and Wake Island.

FSIS Issues Notice on Elimination of Pizza with Meat or Sausage Standards
FSIS issued Notice 73-06 on November 1, to remind inspection program personnel that the sunset date for declaring the percentage of meat or poultry on pizza products containing meat or poultry was October 30.

The notice also provides a copy of the new regulations.

This notice does not require inspection program personnel to perform any new activities.
