WASHINGTON, August 13, 2004 - The Office of the Undersecretary for Food Safety, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, today announced a public meeting to provide information and receive comments on agenda items and draft United States positions for the 26th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission's Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) to be held November 1-5 in Bonn, Germany.

The public meeting will be held on Thursday, September 9, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the FDA Auditorium (1A003), Harvey Wiley Federal Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD. The meeting will allow attendees the opportunity to pose questions and offer comments on the issues and draft U.S. positions that are to be described and discussed at the November session.

Among the agenda items to be discussed are: Guidelines for Use of Nutrition Claims (Dietary Fibre); Guidelines for Vitamin and Mineral Food Supplements; Standards for Processed Cereal-Based Foods for Infants and Young Children; Standards for Infant Formula; and Advisory Lists of Nutrient Compounds for the Use in Foods for Special Dietary Uses Intended for Use by Infants and Young Children.

Codex was created in 1962 by two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization. Codex develops food standards, guidelines and codes of practice in order to protect the health of consumers, ensures fair practices in the food trade and promotes coordination of food standards undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations. The CCNFSDU was established to study specific nutritional problems; draft general provisions concerning the nutritional aspects of all foods; develop standards, guidelines or related texts for foods for special dietary uses; and endorse provisions on nutritional aspects proposed for inclusion in Codex standards.
