Office of Food Safety/FDA to Hold Codex Public Meeting
FSIS published a Federal Register notice Aug. 8 titled Codex Alimentarius Commission: Seventh Session of
the Codex ad hoc Intergovernmental Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology.
This notice announces that USDA's Office of the Under Secretary for Food Safety and the Department of
Health and Human Services' Food and Drug Administration will hold a public meeting Sept. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.,
in Room 0161 South Agriculture Building (Basement), 1400 Independence Ave. SW., Washington, D.C.
The agencies will discuss the agenda items coming before the 7th Session of the Codex ad hoc Intergovernmental
Task Force on Foods Derived from Biotechnology (FBT) and present draft U.S. positions on the agenda items.
The 7th Session of the FBT will be held Sept. 24-28 in Chiba, Japan.

NACMCF Subcommittee to Hold Public Meetings
The National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods (NACMCF) subcommittee on the
Assessment of the Food Safety Importance of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis will hold
public meetings Aug. 21-23, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The purpose of these meetings is to continue discussions toward determining the potential for transmission of
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis, a suspect causative agent for Crohn's
Disease, via foods, and the importance of this organism as a food safety concern.
The meetings will be held at the Aerospace Building, 901 D St., SW., Room 369, Washington, D.C.

FSIS Issues Notice on Food Safety Assessments
FSIS issued Notice 49-07 on Aug. 8 titled Conducting Food Safety Assessments Related to the Control of
Salmonella.
This notice addresses food safety assessments (FSAs) that are conducted to analyze an establishment's
control of Salmonella. FSAs generally assess all aspects of an establishment's food safety system
(see FSIS Directive 5100.1, Enforcement, Investigations, and Analysis Officer (EIAO) Comprehensive Food
Safety Assessment Methodology).
This notice provides specified methodologies that FSIS personnel should use when evaluating control of
Salmonella in poultry slaughter operations. Some strains of Salmonella have been
particularly associated with human illnesses. Therefore, control of this pathogen is necessary to ensure
the safety of poultry. Enforcement, investigations, and analysis officers should assess whether poultry
slaughter establishments have designed their food safety systems to control, and thereby minimize, the
presence of Salmonella.
