FSIS Provides Lab Method Update
A quantitative method for the drug Ceftiofur, called
“Determination for Ceftiofur-Related Residues by High
Performance Liquid Chromatography,” has been converted to
FSIS Chemistry Laboratory Guidebook (CLG) format for use in
agency laboratories. This method is applicable to muscle and
kidney in beef and pork.
Once finalized, the method will be posted to the CLG, the
agency will begin implementation on Oct. 1. For additional

Hurricane Isaac Causes Flooding and Power Outages in
the Gulf Coast
A Consumer’s Guide to Food Safety: Severe Storms and
Hurricanes
Flood waters and the loss of power from high winds and heavy
rains could jeopardize the safety of food for people living
in the Gulf Coast. Knowing how to determine if food is safe
to eat will help minimize the loss of food and reduce the
risk of foodborne illness.
FSIS’ publication, A Consumer’s Guide to Food Safety:
Severe Storms and Hurricanes, provides specific food
safety recommendations on what to do before, during and
after tropical storms and hurricanes. To view the guide,

Nebraska Plant Owners Face Federal Indictments
United States Attorney Deborah Gilg, for the District of
Nebraska, announced last week federal grand jury indictments
against Paul and Kelly Rosberg, owners of Nebraska’s Finest
Meats.
The grand jury handed down a six-count indictment against
the Rosbergs, both of Wausa, Neb., on charges of conspiracy
with intent to defraud by selling approximately 2,600 pounds
of misbranded and/or non-inspected meat and meat products to
the Omaha Public School system in 2011. Additionally, the
indictment alleges the Rosbergs submitted false statements
to FSIS during the course of the investigation.
OPEER investigators, based out of the Lincoln, Neb., field
office, working in conjunction with the USDA Office of the
Inspector General, assisted in serving a search warrant at
the establishment, leading to the confiscation of records,
labels, equipment and other evidence in the case. The
company’s operations were subsequently suspended.
If convicted, the Rosbergs potentially face 3 to 5 years of
federal imprisonment and fines ranging from $10,000 to
$250,000 on each count, along with years of supervised
release.
Indictments are charging documents that contain one or more
individual counts that are accusations, and every defendant
is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
