Editor's Note (Jan. 4, 2011): FSIS is re-issuing Recall Release FSIS-RC-001-2011, to clarify the reason for the recall was mislabeling since monosodium glutamate (MSG) was not declared on the label. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is not classified as an allergen, but can cause a brief reaction in people with a sensitivity to MSG. No other information has changed.

WASHINGTON, Jan 3. 2011 - Crave Foods, a Los Angeles, Calif., establishment is recalling approximately 600 pounds of frozen chicken mushroom pies because they contain monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is not declared on the label.

The products subject to recall include: [View Labels (PDF Only)]

  • 6-lb. cases of "CRAVE PIES CHICKEN MUSHROOM PIE," with each case containing 12 individual packages
The individual package indicates that it contains two pies that are 4 ounces each, and bears the establishment number "P-27348" in the USDA mark of inspection.

The products were produced between Sept. 2010 and Dec. 2010, and were shipped to distribution centers for further retail sales in California and New York.

The problem was discovered by FSIS during a routine inspection. FSIS has received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a physician.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Consumer and media with questions about the recall should contact the company's President, Riaz Surti at (213) 627-8887.

Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov.
