WASHINGTON, May 11, 2011 - Tri-City Cheese and Meats, a Kawkawlin, Mich., establishment is recalling approximately 252 pounds of kippered beef because it contains sodium nitrite, which is not listed as an ingredient on the label.

The products subject to recall include: [View Labels]
  • 1-lb. packages of Troll Smokehouse "Kippered Beef ORIGINAL FLAVOR Natural smoke added."
  • 5-oz. packages of Troll Smokehouse "Kippered Beef ORIGINAL FLAVOR Natural smoke added."

Each package bears the establishment number "Est. 32015" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were produced between Jan. 24, 2011 and April 19, 2011 and have sell by dates of June 9, 2011 through Sept. 2, 2011. The kippered beef was sold to consumers in Michigan through Internet and retail sales.

During a routine label review at the plant, FSIS inspection personnel discovered that sodium nitrite was not listed as an ingredient. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
