Editor's Note, May 11, 2010: This Recall Notification Report was issued May 6, 2010. On May 7, 2010,
FSIS determined a change in status from a Class III to a Class II recall was warranted due to a lack of inspection. Although
no new products were included, FSIS issued a news release on
May 7, 2010 to reflect this change. Both releases have also been corrected, as they inadvertently stated that "the retail
distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS Web site." FSIS does not post retail distribution lists for Class II and III recalls.
The correct version of this release can be found at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/ News_&_Events/Recall_031_2010_Release/index.asp.

WASHINGTON, May 6, 2010 - Vienna Beef Ltd., a Chicago, Ill., establishment, is recalling approximately 49,600 pounds of fully
cooked mini pretzel dog products because of misbranding, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's
Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The products are considered misbranded because they
do not bear the USDA mark of inspection on the package.
The products subject to recall include:
- 16-ounce bags of "VIENNA Beef Mini Pretzel Dogs." Each package bears a sell-by date ranging from February 2, 2010 to July 1, 2010.
- 32-ounce bags of "VIENNA Beef Mini Pretzel Dogs." Each package bears a sell-by date ranging from May 31, 2010 to October 24, 2010.
The products were produced between December 2, 2009, and April 30, 2010, and were distributed at the retail level in Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The problem was discovered by FSIS as part of routine surveillance of products in commerce. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness or allergic reaction should contact a physician.
FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.
Consumer and media with questions about the recall should contact Executive Vice President Jack Bodman at (773) 435-2317.
Consumers with food safety questions can "Ask Karen," the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at
AskKaren.gov. The toll-free USDA Meat
and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday
through Friday. Recorded food safety messages are available 24 hours a day.
