FSIS operates under the authority of the Federal Meat Inspection Act,
the Poultry Products Inspection Act, and the
Egg Products Inspection Act. The Federal Meat
Inspection Act of 1906 required Federal employees to inspect all meat and meat products moving in interstate commerce.
The Poultry Products Act of 1957 provided for voluntary Federal inspection of poultry and poultry products. The Wholesome Meat
Act of 1967 and Wholesome Poultry Products Act of 1968 extended inspection and enforcement requirements to products in intrastate
commerce and imported products. Under these statutes, FSIS has the authority to develop regulations that give specific direction
and establish specific measures. The legislation grants FSIS the authority to revise regulations and guidance consistent with
technological advances and emerging problems.
