New Codex Manager Named
FSIS Administrator Al Almanza has announced the selection of Mary Frances Lowe as the new U.S. Codex Manager.
She succeeds Karen Stuck, who has held the position since April 2009.
Mary Frances is currently a senior program advisor in the Office of Pesticide Programs at the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and has a long history of involvement with Codex. Her training and job experience in science
and technical issues, communications, and executive management provide a good background for leading the work of
U.S. Codex.
Mary Frances has been with EPA since 1989, and previously served in policy positions at FDA and the Department
of Health and Human Services. She holds a masters degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University, M.A. and
M.A.L.D. degrees from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a bachelor's degree from the College of
William and Mary.
Upcoming Committee Meetings
Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) will hold its 44th Session at the Intercontinental
Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana, from November 12-16, 2012. The agenda for this session will feature discussion
of the proposed draft revisions on the Principles for the Establishment and Application of Microbiological
Criteria for Food; proposed draft guidelines for control of Trichinella spiralis and Cysticercus
bovis in meat; the proposed draft revision to the Code of Hygienic Practice for Spices and Aromatic Plants;
and the proposed annex for berries to the Codex of Hygienic Practice for Fresh Fruits and Vegetables.
In conjunction with this session, the United States will recognize the 50th Anniversary of Codex by hosting a
special panel discussion entitled: Codex at 50: Past Accomplishments and Future Challenges. The discussion will
be held on November 14 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and feature the five presentations: Trends in Agricultural Trade,
Changes in Public Health Issues in Codex, Challenges for Developing Countries, Challenges for
Public Health Regulators, and Through the Looking Glass—A Peek at the Future.
FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Asia (CCASIA): The 18th Session of CCASIA will meet
in Tokyo, Japan, November 5-9. The United States will send an observer.
Upcoming Public Meetings
Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) will hold a
public meeting on November 7, from 1:00-4:00 PM to present and solicit comments on the draft U.S. positions on the
topics on the agenda up the 34th Session of CCNFSDU. The public meeting will take place at FDA's Harvey Wiley
Building, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, MD, Room 1A001 and 1A002. Individuals may also participate via
teleconference by calling 1-888-858-2144; Participant Code: 6208658. The 34th Session of CCNFSDU will be held in
Bad Soden, Germany, December 3-7, 2012.

FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for Near East (CCNEA): The Codex Secretariat invites
member countries and observer organizations to comment on a draft regional standard for Doogh (a composite
fermented milk product), prepared by Iran. For those interested in submitting proposals for consideration by the
United States, please submit comments to the U.S. Codex Office
