Upcoming Public Meetings

Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU): The public meeting for the upcoming 33rd Session of CCNFSDU will be held on October 20, from 1-4 pm in the Harvey Wiley Building, FDA, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, Room 1A-003 College Park, Md., 20740. Individuals may also participate via Call-in number: 1-866-859-5767; Participant Code: 2225276.

The public meeting will discuss U.S. draft positions on the following: Proposed Draft Revision of the Guidelines on Formulated Supplementary Foods for Older Infants and Young Children; Proposed Draft Amendment of the Standard for Processed Cereal-Based Foods for Infants and Young Children to include a New Part B for Underweight Children; and Drafting a revision for guidelines regarding essential nutrients in foods. CCNFSDU will meet, from November 14-18, in Bad Soden am Taunus, Germany.

New Electronic Working Groups (eWG)

Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products (CCFFP): Iran will chair an eWG on the development of a section on Sturgeon Caviar for the Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products. The eWG, working in English, will review the existing Code of Practice with the objective to add the proposed new work, which will include all recognized controls at the individual, production (including management of live sturgeon in aquaculture farms),processing, storage and transporting steps and other related matters.

Individuals in the United States interested in contributing to the eWG should send their names, official titles, and email addresses to the U.S. Codex Office ( uscodexoffice@fsis.usda.gov). Codex members and observer organizations interested in participating should send the contact information of their designated representatives to Majid Mosadegh ( majidmosadegh@gmail.com) and Afsaneh Samiei ( fishcommittee@gmail.com) by November 1. Iran projects that the draft document will be ready for comments (at Step 3) by June 2012.

The report of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on the Risks and Benefits of Fish Consumption is now available online at http://www.fao.org/docrep/014/ba0136e/ba0136e00.pdf.

Call For Data

The FAO/WHO JEMRA Secretariat has issued a call for data and experts on the public health risk of histamine and other biogenic amines from fish and fishery products. Applications should be forwarded to the attention of Dr. Iddya Karunasagar ( jemra@fao.org) at the FAO and to Dr. Kazuko Fukushima ( foodsafety@who.int) at the WHO. The deadline for submission of data and information is December 31.
