Recent Outreach

Committee on Asia (CCASIA): The U.S. Codex Office concluded a three-day colloquium in Tokyo, Japan, on August 24. Views were exchanged among delegates from the United States and 57 Delegates from 10 CCASIA member countries to prepare for their participation in upcoming meetings of the Committees on Food Hygiene, Fish and Fishery Products, and Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses. The colloquium was co-hosted with Japan and attended by representatives from Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada, and the United States. This is the second U.S.-Asia Colloquium since the series began earlier this year.

Electronic Working Group (eWG)

Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL): Member countries and observer organizations are invited to participate in an eWG to review proposals for substances for inclusion in the Guidelines for the Production, Processing, Labeling and Marketing of Organically Produced Foods (CAC/GL 32-1999). The work group, co-chaired by the United States and Cameroon, will further consider the use of ethylene for sprout inhibition in potatoes and onions. Member countries and observer organizations interested in participating in this eWG should provide the name(s), official title, and email address of their representative(s) to USCodex@fsis.usda.gov and jeanine_nkodo@yahoo.fr by September 7, 2012.

Request for Comments

Processed Cheese: The Codex Secretariat issued a Circular Letter (CL 2012/24-CAC) requesting comments and information by February 28, 2013, on gaps in the safety and quality provisions of Codex texts to justify new work on a standard for processed cheese. The 2012 Codex Commission agreed to discontinue work on a standard, but in response to concerns raised by some countries, agreed to seek input on gaps that Codex would need to address. Interested parties in the United States should submit their comments to: USCodex@fsis.usda.gov; interested parties in other countries should submit their comments directly to the Codex Secretariat at: codex@fao.org.

Veterinary Drugs: The Codex Secretariat has issued, on behalf of the Committee on Residues of Veterinary Drugs in Foods (CCRVDF), a Circular Letter (CL 2012/23-RVDF) with a request for comments on: (1) draft Maximum Residue Levels for Monepantel (sheep tissues) at Step 6; and (2) draft Risk Management Recommendations for Chloramphenicol and Malachite Green at Step 3. Member countries and observer organizations are invited to send comments by May 30, 2013, to the CCRVDF Secretariat in the U.S. Codex Office at CCRVDF-USSEC@fsis.usda.gov and to the Codex Secretariat at codex@fao.org.
