Committees & Task Forces

  • The Ad Hoc Intergovernmental Codex Task Force on Animal Feeding will be held in Bern, Switzerland, on February 20-24, 2012. The Task Force will focus on drafting guidelines on the application of risk assessment for feed and developing a prioritized list of hazards in feed. Dr. Daniel McChesney, of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, is the U.S. Delegate to the Task Force, and is compiling a list for distributing information about the task force to U.S. agencies and organizations. Persons interested in joining the distribution list should send their email addresses to Daniel McChesney (Daniel.McChesney@fda.hhs.gov) with a copy to USCodex@fsis.usda.gov.

New Working Groups

Committee on Fats and Oils (CCFO)

  • Switzerland, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an electronic Working Group (eWG), which will be conducted in English, to prepare a Proposed Draft Standard for Fish Oils. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to the Swiss Codex Contact Point (codex@bag.admin.ch) by September 15. The Proposed Draft Standard for Fish Oils will be circulated for comments at Step 3 and will be considered by the 23rd session of the CCFO in February 2013.

Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA)

  • South Africa, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG (conducted in English), to continue work on the application of Footnote 161 in the General Standard for Food Additives (GSFA). The eWG’s goal is to formulate recommendations to facilitate a uniform implementation of section 3.2 of the Preamble of the GSFA and the use of the Footnote. A paper prepared by South Africa containing background information and an analysis on the use of this Footnote has been circulated for comment.

Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL)

  • Australia, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG to consider whether Section 3.1.2 (on the list of nutrients to always be declared on a mandatory or voluntary basis) of the Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling should be amended in light of the recommendations in the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to the Australian Codex Contact Point (codex.contact@daff.gov.au) by August 10. The eWG’s goal is to have any draft amendments ready by February 2012 for consideration at the next CCFL session in May 2012.

Committee on Fresh Fruits and Vegetables (CCFFV)

  • Colombia, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG (conducted in English and Spanish) to develop a Codex Standard for Golden Passion Fruit. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to the Colombian Codex Contact Point, Ricardo Enrique Munar LeÓn (rmunar@icontec.org) with a copy to the Codex Secretariat (codex@fao.org) by August 31.

  • Spain, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG (conducted in English and Spanish) for the revision of sizing-related provisions (uniformity rules) of the Codex Standard for Avocado. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to the Spanish Codex Contact Point, Jaime Camps Almiñana (jcamps@comercio.mityc.es) with a copy to the Codex Secretariat (codex@fao.org) by August 15.

  • The United States, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG (conducted in English) for the revision of sizing provisions and uniformity rules of the Codex Standard for Pomegranate. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to U.S. Delegate Dorian LaFond (Dorian.Lafond@ams.usda.gov) and to USCodex@fsis.usda.gov by August 31.

Committee on Pesticide Residues (CCPR)

  • The United States, acting as the lead country with the assistance of Kenya and Thailand, invite Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG on Minor Uses and Specialty Crops to determine the minimum number of field trials necessary to support the establishment of maximum residue limits (MRLs) for minor crops/specialty crops to facilitate data submissions to the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR). The Committee agreed that the eWG will hold a physical meeting immediately prior to the next CCPR session in April 2012 and that both working groups will work in English only. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses for their designated representatives to Barbara Madden (madden.barbara@epa.gov) and to USCodex@fsis.usda.gov no later than August 5.

Committee on Processed Fruits & Vegetables (CCPFV)

  • The United States, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in eWG (conducted in English) to revise the Codex Standards for Quick Frozen Vegetables. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to U.S. Delegate Dorian LaFond (Dorian.Lafond@ams.usda.gov) and to USCodex@fsis.usda.gov by August 31.

  • France, acting as the lead country, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG (conducted in English) on the development of Sampling Plans including Metrological Provisions for controlling Minimum Drained Weight of Canned Fruits and Vegetables in Packing Media. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to Claudine Muckensturm of the French Codex Contact Point (Claudine.MUCKENSTURM@dgccrf.finances.gouv.fr) by August 31.

  • The European Union (EU), acting as chair, has invited Codex members and observers to participate in an eWG (conducted in English) to further revise the Codex Standard for Table Olives. This eWG was created in response to the discussion at the most recent CCPFV session (October 2010) and the latest developments in the International Olive Council with regard to the revision of the OIC Standard for Table Olives. Interested parties should send the names, official titles, and email addresses of their designated representatives to Dr. Risto Holma (Risto.Holma@ec.europa.eu) by August 31.

  • The United States, along with the EU, will co-chair an eWG on Food Additive provisions within the GSFA. The working group has been tasked with providing justification for exceptions to the GSFA, in light of section 3.2 of the Preamble. The U.S. delegates to both the CCFA and the CCPFV are working closely to ensure that their positions are consistent and reflect a strong science-based harmonized approach to the development of Codex standards. Codex members and observers interested in participating should send the name and contact information of their representatives to Dr. Risto Holma (Risto.Holma@ec.europa.eu) by August 31.
